PHYSICAL REHABILITATION NETWORK

Physical Rehabilitation Network (PRN) of San Jose, California provides billing and collection services to a network of physical therapy clinics in California and Arizona. PRN's AIX server runs VantageMed's Medoccur, proprietary practice management software, storing about 30GB of patient data. PRN's access to that information is the company's primary asset and must be online and accessible, as well as HIPAA compliant. James Flanagan, PRN's network administrator, needed to shorten their back-up window and found that with tape, recovering files didn't always work. To further complicate matters, Flanagan monitors the AIX server and its backup from about 500 miles south in Carlsbad, Calif.

In working with the medical profession, PRN is also concerned with maintaining HIPAA compliance. From a data backup and recovery perspective, the information they maintain and share via e-mail has to be secure and encrypted. By utilizing the disk-based EVault Protect data protection and recovery service with encryption included free, Flanagan feels confident about the data's security.

"We just can't afford to lose any data and we were using very tedious tape backup procedures," recalls Flanagan.

Since backups are being conducted and managed remotely from the AIX server, EVault's over-the-wire encryption capability was a requirement PRN needed to order to maintain HIPAA compliance in that area.

With its data now HIPAA-compliant and backups operating reliably with fast restores, Flanagan can focus on other aspects of his job as a network administrator.

"The backup procedure is now fairly routine," he reports. "I don't have to ask questions about it because it just runs. I'm very happy about that."
